Shirley Jean Morant

January 13, 1961 – August 14, 2026

Shirley Jean Morant, 64, went home to be with the Lord. Soft-spoken and kind-hearted, Shirley touched everyone she met with her passionate spirit and resilient strength.

Shirley was born in South Carolina and moved to Brooklyn, New York. She first lived in far Rockaway right across the street from far rockaway playland. From there she moved to East New York and finally made her way to the Coney Island neighborhood she called home. After meeting the love of her life, James Emory Jenkins, they built a home and life together filled with love, and laughter.

Shirley attended Mark Twain Intermediate School for the Gifted & Talented where she graduated early. After that attended Lincoln High School and went on to graduate from Kingsborough Community College with her bachelors of science. Post undergrad she enjoyed devoting her time working for the College Now program, helping high school students earn college credit.

For 22 years, Shirley dedicated her career to serving others as a case manager in NYC’s Department of Social Services, offering the same compassion and care to the families she worked with that she gave so freely to her own. Her family was her greatest joy — she spoke of Emory and her children with a pride and devotion that never wavered. In quieter moments, she found comfort in the sound of R&B music, and she was especially fond of Chris Brown, whose music brought her joy right up to the end.

Shirley was preceded in death by the love of her life, James Emory Jenkins; her son, Lawrence Raheem; and her parents, Philip and Rena Morant.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Jorvon Morant, John Morant, James Jenkins, Michael Morant, and Yvette Morant.

She also leaves behind a beautiful legacy of grandchildren who brought her endless joy: Jsiah, Namani, Phoenix, Layla, Kharizma, Kristin, James Jr., Semaj, Jaylin, Natalia, Denzell, Kendell, Zachariah, Amaya Zahmier and Zyire She also leaves behind siblings, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Though her voice was soft, her love was immeasurable, and the mark she leaves on the hearts of her family will last a lifetime. Shirley's compassion, and her unshakeable love for her family will continue to live on in each of the lives she touched.

Rest in peace, Shirley. You are loved beyond measure, and you will be deeply missed.
