In Loving Memory of Mildred Frierson

Mildred was a gentle soul whose kindness, intelligence, and quiet strength touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. She carried herself with warmth, grace, and a lighthearted spirit that made people feel comfortable and cared for.

Born in New York City, Mildred was the second child of the late Juan Ortiz, Pastor of Iglesia Pentecostal de Jesucristo, and his beloved wife and helpmate, Elvira Ortiz Lebrón, both natives of Maunabo, Puerto Rico. Raised in a home rooted in faith, compassion, and service, those values became the foundation of the woman she grew to be.

Mildred was a proud graduate of Hunter College, where she earned her degree in Psychology. Although her lifelong dream was to become a nurse, her true calling was caring for others. She dedicated her career to serving people as a counselor for individuals with disabilities and later as a home health aide, compassionately caring for the elderly and those in need. Helping others was never simply a profession—it was a reflection of her heart.

Earlier in life, Mildred was blessed with two daughters, Denise Campos-Carmenatty and Jacqueline Campos, with the late Angel Campos.

Later, she found lasting love with Walter Frierson, with whom she shared over three wonderful decades filled with faith, companionship, laughter, and music. One of her greatest joys was supporting Walter and listening to him perform as a singer. His music always brought a smile to her face.

She also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved drawing and painting, challenging herself with crossword puzzles and brain teasers, and spending quiet moments creating or solving something new.

To those who knew her best, Mildred will be remembered as sweet, thoughtful, intelligent, and deeply compassionate. She possessed a quiet strength, an unwavering kindness, and a gentle spirit that made people feel seen, heard, and loved. Her life was a beautiful example of humility, grace, and selfless service.

Mildred is lovingly survived by her devoted husband, Walter Frierson; her beloved daughters, Denise Campos-Carmenatty and Jacqueline Campos; and her cherished grandchildren, Jazmin Nasib, Brooklyn Carmenatty, and Zyla Carmenatty, who lovingly knew her as “Grandma Milly” and brought immeasurable joy to her life.

She is also survived by her beloved siblings, Michelle Ortiz Ramos, Noemi Ortiz , Magdalena Ortiz, Juan Ortiz, Nancy Ortiz, and Rafael Ortiz; her brothers- and sisters-in-law and son-in-law; countless cousins; and a host of beautiful nieces and nephews, who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan Ortiz and Elvira Ortiz Lebrón, and by her beloved brothers, Juan Ramón Ortiz and Nelson Ortiz.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her love remains woven into our lives, our memories, and the generations that follow. We find comfort in knowing that she has been welcomed into her eternal home, where there is no more pain, only perfect peace in the presence of our Lord and Savior.
