Carmine Santa Maria passed away on March 10, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service, compassion, and devotion to his family and community. Born on August 14, 1935, Carmine was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, community leader, and friend whose presence brought warmth, laughter, and hope wherever he went.
Carmine dedicated much of his life to helping others and improving the world around him. He was the creator of Project LEARN - Let’s End All Racism Now, a reflection of his deep commitment to unity, justice, and understanding. He was a respected community activist and an active member of the Bensonhurst West End Community Council. He also served as President of School Board District 21, wrote for the Brooklyn Graphic, and worked alongside Assemblyman William Colton, always using his voice and talents to advocate for the betterment of his neighborhood and the people in it. He was also a letter carrier for the United States Post Office, a role that reflected his dedication, reliability, and connection to the people of the community. Carmine was also the heart of the Big Screechers column of the Brooklyn Graphic newspaper, where his voice, personality, and love for the neighborhood further endeared him to so many.
He was the kind of man who had no boundaries when it came to kindness. Carmine lit up every room with his smile, his energy, and his willingness to help anyone in need. He would truly give you the shirt off his back. He had the classic stubborn Sicilian spirit, but beneath that was a heart of gold. Family and friends knew they could call on him day or night, and he would be there without hesitation. You could always pick him out in a crowd. He was known for his cheering roar.
Carmine had a passion for life and for the arts. He was an avid lover of Broadway and the theater, and he found joy in sharing that love with others. He was also an accomplished ballroom dance instructor and taught at FIAO, where he brought grace, rhythm, and joy to many. Some of his family’s most cherished memories are of watching Carmine and his beloved wife, Sharon, dancing the cha-cha together at parties. He was also a lifeguard, a fan of Zorro, and every Christmas he would lovingly dress as Santa Claus for schools and nonprofit events, bringing joy to children and families throughout the community.
Over the years, Carmine received many citations, awards, and recognitions for his exceptional contributions to society and to the local community, a testament to the countless lives he touched and uplifted.
He was predeceased by his parents, Calogero and Grazia, and by his three sisters, Sue (Assunta), Millie (Carmella), and Jennie (Giovanna).
Carmine is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon; his daughter, Dana-Grace, and her children, Alexa, Michael, and Vanessa; and his son, Carl, and his children, Jake, Cassandra, and Dean.
Carmine Santa Maria will be remembered as a man of boundless generosity, endless charm, and deep love. He gave his life to his family, his community, and the causes he believed in. He leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
